Harris Embraces ‘Palestinian Self-Determination’ And Seeks US Presidency

CHICAGO (Worthy News) – Kamala Harris has told Americans that voting for her will turn a fresh page in the country’s politics and keep an “unserious man” out of the White House while trying to receive the support of pro-Palestine protesters by embracing “Palestinian self-determination.”
Harris, who currently serves as vice president, spoke on the final day of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, delivering the most significant speech of her political career that was rich in feel-good-moments but often lacked
policy details.
Yet, in one of the most highly anticipated portions of her live televised remarks, Harris outlined her stance on Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.
Harris condemned the Hamas attacks against Israel on October 7 that killed some 1,200 people but also mourned the “many innocent lives lost” in Gaza since the start of the war.
She vowed to “always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself” in an apparent rejection of recent calls for an arms embargo.
“President [Joe] Biden and I are working around the clock because now is the time to get a hostage deal and ceasefire done,” Harris said. “President Biden and I are working to end this war such that Israel is secure, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza ends, and the Palestinian people can realize their right to dignity, security, freedom, and self-determination.”
Her call for Palestinian self-determination was met with robust applause in the convention center. Yet Convention observers said it was unclear whether her remarks were enough to meet the demands of pro-Palestine supporters and factions within her Democratic Party.
BIG PROTESTS
Thousands took to the streets of Chicago to protest the war this week while there were major tensions on these issues among Democrats.
However, Harris used her relatively short speech to urge Democrats to remain united. “With this election, our nation has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past. A chance to chart a New Way Forward. Not as members of any one party or faction, but as Americans.”
Journalists wondered whether the New Way Forward, words capitalized in excerpts provided ahead of her remarks, was becoming the new slogan and an alternative to her rival Donald J. Trump’s “Let’s Make America Great Again” call.
With less than three months left before election day—and with polls showing a tight contest against Republican former president Donald J. Trump—Harris tried to fire up the Democratic faithful by recalling her upbringing and past as a California attorney general.
She asked the audience to “imagine Trump with no guardrails” and called on Americans to “fight for this country we love.”
Harris said she knows “there are people of various political views watching tonight. And I want you to know: I promise to be a President for all Americans.”
The 59-year-old Harris, who would be the first female president and Black woman to lead the United States, pledged to “be a President who unites us around our highest aspirations. A President who leads — and listens. Who is realistic. Practical. And has common sense.”
AMERICAN FIGHT
The former prosecutor said she “always fights for the American people. From the courthouse to the White House, that has been my life’s work.”
The vice-president lashed out at Trump and the conservative-dominated Supreme Court created under his first term as president.
“We know what a second Trump term would look like. It’s all laid out in “Project 2025.” … In many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man. But the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious,” Harris told the crowd.
“Consider the power he will have— especially after the United States Supreme Court just ruled he would be immune from criminal prosecution.”
She stressed, “Our nation, with this election, has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past, a chance to chart a new way forward – not as members of any one party or faction, but as Americans.”
She then said to roaring applause: “On behalf of everyone whose story could only be written in the greatest nation on Earth, I accept your nomination for president of the United States of America.”
