Hawaii’s Kīlauea Volcano Roars Back To Life (VIDEO)

Background

by Stefan J. Bos, Worthy News Chief International Correspondent

HAWAII, USA (Worthy News) – Hawaii’s Kīlauea volcano has roared back to life, hurling red-hot lava nearly 1,000 feet (about 300 meters) into the air and sending a towering plume of ash and volcanic gases to more than 20,000 feet (over 6,000 meters), officials and eyewitnesses said Sunday.

Footage obtained by Worthy News showed the impact of the eruption, which reportedly already destroyed one monitoring camera. Residents with asthma or other respiratory conditions were urged to monitor air quality advisories across Hawaii, the largest island in the U.S., and home to several volcanoes.

Kīlauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, has a long history of destructive eruptions, including the 2018 Lower East Rift Zone event that destroyed more than 700 homes. While the current activity is far less dangerous, the volcano’s behavior shows that its eruptive system is fully active, scientists said.

The dramatic eruption, filmed and shared widely on social media, unfolded inside Halemaʻumaʻu, the crater at the summit of Kīlauea within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

Though the eruption is confined to the crater, scientists warned that the vigorous fountaining and high gas output can pose risks to visitors and residents downwind.

ONE OF EARTH’S MOST ACTIVE VOLCANOES

Kīlauea remains under a “WATCH” alert level with an ORANGE aviation code, meaning another eruptive phase could occur with little warning, authorities said

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) classifies Kīlauea among the most active volcanoes on the planet, with frequent eruptions over the past four decades.

The summit region has recently produced a series of powerful lava-fountain events, some reaching several hundred feet (meters) high.

USGS scientists said the latest eruption episode follows increased seismic activity and ground deformation beneath the summit — signals that magma was rising toward the surface.

Despite the intensity of the eruption, authorities stressed that no communities were currently threatened, as all activity remained inside the closed summit crater.

However, volcanic smog, ash particles, and sharp volcanic glass fragments known as Pele’s hair could drift miles (kilometers) downwind, officials cautioned.
