Iran Seeks Russian Support as Trump’s Strikes Devastate Nuclear Sites

Background

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

TEHRAN / MOSCOW (Worthy News) – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dispatched his foreign minister to Moscow on Monday in a bid to secure stronger support from Russian President Vladimir Putin, following devastating U.S. airstrikes that targeted Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Moscow carrying a personal letter from Khamenei, senior sources told Reuters. The letter reportedly urged Putin to take a firmer stand against the United States and Israel in light of the strikes, though it did not specify what assistance Tehran sought.

President Donald Trump ordered the strikes, dubbed Operation Midnight Hammer, on Saturday. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the operation as having “devastated” and “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear program. The coordinated assault hit three major Iranian nuclear sites and marked a dramatic escalation in tensions.

Appearing alongside Araghchi, Putin denounced the U.S. action as “unjustified” and “baseless.” He warned that such aggression would only fuel further instability. “It gives us the opportunity to discuss these pressing issues and think together about how to move forward,” Putin said during the joint press conference.

Russia and Iran have deepened ties since Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022, cooperating militarily and economically. The two nations signed a 20-year strategic partnership last year, but it does not include a mutual defense clause obligating military intervention. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia’s support would “depend entirely on Iran’s needs” and emphasized Moscow’s willingness to mediate.

China and North Korea also condemned the strikes. China accused the U.S. of provoking greater regional conflict, while North Korea blamed Washington and Israel for destabilizing the Middle East.

A Prophetic Dimension

Beyond the geopolitical ramifications, prophecy teachers and students of biblical eschatology are watching developments closely. Many point to the alliance between Russia — often identified as the “uttermost parts of the north” in Ezekiel 38 — and Iran, the modern nation occupying the ancient Persian Empire. This partnership, they argue, aligns with the prophetic outline of the Gog and Magog war described in the Bible, where a coalition from the north comes against Israel in the latter days.

Some see the strengthening ties between Moscow and Tehran amid rising tensions with Israel as a potential precursor to that conflict. While the timeline and fulfillment remain subjects of debate, the convergence of these nations in military and strategic cooperation is drawing renewed focus from those who track Bible prophecy.

For Moscow, the crisis presents a delicate balancing act: upholding its growing alliance with Tehran without drawing itself into direct confrontation with the United States or Israel. Israeli officials have reportedly reassured Russia that its nuclear specialists at the Iranian nuclear facility in Bushehr remain safe.

As the world watches what comes next, many are not only analyzing the political calculations but also looking to ancient texts that speak of nations gathering for a climactic showdown in the Middle East.
