(Worthy News) – Dozens of tornadoes swept the southern United States at the weekend, killing at least four people, Axios reports.
Causing flight cancelations and delays for holiday travelers, the severe storm system triggered tornadoes in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Texas, Axios said.
Two of those killed were in Mississippi, in Adams County and Lowndes County respectively, Axios reports. Multiple injuries and storm damage were also reported in the state.
A third death occurred in a storm-related road accident in Iredell County, North Carolina and a fourth person was killed in the Liverpool area south of Houston, Texas on Saturday. The region north of Houston reported damage to 300 buildings and injuries to eight people.
The Storm Prediction Center issued a rare “moderate risk” outlook – level 4 out of 5 on the threat scale – for parts of Mississippi and Louisiana, along with a major “Particularly Dangerous Situation” tornado watch for southeastern Arkansas, central and southwestern Louisiana, southwestern Mississippi and southeastern Texas on Saturday, Axios said.
“Widespread damage was also reported in Athens, Ala., where the National Weather Service said on X Sunday preliminary information showed EF-1 tornado damage with estimated 100 mph wind speeds ‘with a max path width of 160 yards,’” Axios noted.
