Study: UK Evangelicals Younger, More Diverse As Millions Embrace Beliefs

LONDON, BRITAIN (Worthy News) – Evangelical Christianity in Britain is younger, more ethnically diverse and more male than the wider population, with millions embracing its beliefs, according to a landmark study seen by Worthy News.

The 28-page “Understanding UK Evangelicals” report, published by the Evangelical Alliance, estimates that 12.3 million people across the United Kingdom either hold evangelical beliefs, identify as evangelical, or both.

Researchers find that adults under 35 are the age group most likely to identify as evangelical and embrace evangelical beliefs, challenging long-standing perceptions of Christianity as an aging movement in increasingly secular Britain.

Nearly a third of evangelicals come from ethnic minority backgrounds, compared with 17 percent of Britain’s wider adult population, while roughly 60 percent of evangelicals are male, the study finds.

YOUNGER EVANGELICALS

The research also concludes that 64 percent of practicing Christians are “broad evangelicals,” defined as those who both hold evangelical beliefs and identify as evangelical.

Researchers describe practicing Christians as those attending church at least monthly while independently praying and reading the Bible at least weekly.

Some 11.4 percent of U.K. adults identify as evangelical, equivalent to an estimated 8 million people, while 14.1 percent, or about 9.9 million, hold evangelical beliefs.

A narrower category of 7.9 percent, representing about 5.5 million people, is classified as “broad evangelicals” because they both identify as evangelical and hold evangelical beliefs.

MILLIONS IDENTIFIED

The study also identifies about 2.6 million “classic evangelicals,” representing 3.8 percent of the population. They strongly hold evangelical beliefs, identify as evangelical and belong to Protestant traditions.

Young adults are particularly prominent. Some 43 percent of classic evangelicals are under 35, including 19.4 percent aged 18 to 24 and 24.1 percent aged 25 to 34.

Among broad evangelicals, 41 percent are under 35, highlighting what researchers view as a significant generational dimension to evangelical Christianity in Britain.

Ethnic diversity is another striking finding, with about 30 percent of evangelicals coming from ethnic minority backgrounds.

DIVERSE MOVEMENT

Black Christians are particularly prominent among classic evangelicals, accounting for 27.9 percent of that group. Researchers find that 63 percent of Black respondents are comfortable describing themselves as evangelical.

The study also reveals an unusual gender balance compared with traditional perceptions of British church attendance: 61.6 percent of classic evangelicals and 59.8 percent of broad evangelicals are men.

Pentecostals form the largest denominational group among classic evangelicals, accounting for 29 percent, followed by Anglicans at 17 percent.

Anglicans make up 24 percent of broad evangelicals, while Roman Catholics account for 19 percent of that category, despite evangelicalism historically being associated primarily with Protestant Christianity.

ACROSS DENOMINATIONS

The Evangelical Alliance describes the findings as encouraging, arguing that they challenge the widespread narrative of continuing religious decline in Britain.

“At a time of widely reported decline in religion, the statistics tell a different story,” the report reads.

“Evangelical Christianity is thriving among young people, ethnic minority populations and men,” it adds, predicting that the demographic profile could support continued church growth.

Gavin Calver, chief executive officer of the Evangelical Alliance, stresses that the findings suggest evangelical Christians remain central to British church life.

CHURCH ‘THRIVING’

“The Evangelical church in the U.K. is thriving: it’s young, diverse and growing,” Calver notes, adding that evangelicals comprise almost two-thirds of practicing Christians.

Danny Webster, the Evangelical Alliance’s director of advocacy and research, argues that the findings also challenge perceptions of evangelicalism shaped by political developments in the United States.

“For years, the word ‘Evangelical’ has often been misunderstood or reduced to political stereotypes imported from the United States,” Webster observes.

He describes British evangelicals as a diverse movement spanning denominations and united by Christian beliefs rather than politics.

POLITICAL STEREOTYPES

The research was published as the Evangelical Alliance marks its 180th anniversary. Founded in 1846, it describes itself as the oldest and largest evangelical unity movement in Britain.

Research firm Whitestone Insight conducted the online survey between February 25 and March 8, 2026, using a nationally representative sample of 8,407 U.K. adults. Of those surveyed, 3,804 identified as Christians and answered additional questions about their Christian practices, evangelical identity and beliefs.

The Evangelical Alliance puts the research’s margin of error at about 1.6 percentage points. The report notes that its percentages are based on U.K. adults, while population estimates apply those figures to Britain’s roughly 70 million residents, including children.

Researchers say the study aims to provide a clearer picture of the size and changing identity of evangelical Christianity in Britain.
