Trump Announces Israel-Iran Ceasefire, Declares End to ’12-Day War’

Background

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

(Worthy News) – U.S. President Donald Trump announced late Monday that Israel and Iran have agreed to a complete and total ceasefire, bringing what he dubbed “The 12-Day War” to an end. The announcement followed days of intense fighting that saw Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Iranian missile barrages on Israeli cities, and U.S. military intervention.

In a series of posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the ceasefire would take effect in about six hours, after both nations complete ongoing military operations. Iran is set to begin the ceasefire first, followed by Israel 12 hours later. Trump said an “Official END” to the conflict would be marked 24 hours after the initial halt in hostilities.

“CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE,” Trump wrote. “This is a war that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will!”

Trump praised both nations for their “stamina, courage, and intelligence,” framing the agreement as a major diplomatic achievement. He also credited Qatar for brokering the deal after the Qatari emir personally engaged with Iranian and U.S. leadership. A senior Iranian official confirmed to Reuters that Tehran had accepted the Qatari-mediated proposal.

Vice President JD Vance echoed Trump’s optimism in a Fox News interview, calling the ceasefire “a new dawn of peace and prosperity” for the region. Vance said U.S. strikes had crippled Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, rendering it incapable of producing a nuclear weapon. “We destroyed their capability, and now we have an opportunity to restart a real peace process,” he added.

The ceasefire deal came after Iran launched a symbolic missile strike on the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, in response to U.S. attacks on its nuclear sites. Most of the missiles were intercepted, and no injuries were reported. Trump downplayed the attack, thanking Iran for the warning and calling it a sign of de-escalation.

Israeli officials, while not immediately confirming the ceasefire, described the military campaign as a clear victory that significantly degraded Iran’s capabilities. According to Israeli assessments, Iran sought an immediate ceasefire while Israel initially preferred to extend operations to meet strategic goals. Ultimately, both sides agreed to end hostilities within days.

The conflict began on June 13 with Israel’s Operation Rising Lion, targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities and key military leaders. Iran responded with massive missile and drone barrages, killing at least nine Israelis and wounding dozens more. Israel retaliated with repeated airstrikes, including an unprecedented attack on Tehran’s Evin prison. The U.S. entered the conflict on June 21, launching Operation Midnight Hammer, which saw B-2 bombers and cruise missiles targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

Regional and global reactions to the fighting were mixed. Gulf states urged diplomacy to avoid regional destabilization, while Russia and China condemned U.S. and Israeli actions. Oil prices fluctuated amid fears of disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, though the vital shipping lane remained open.

Estimates suggest at least 25 Israelis and between 639 and 900 Iranians were killed during the fighting, with thousands more injured. No American casualties were reported.
