WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – U.S. President Donald J. Trump has fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on after months of controversy, including the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal officers in Minneapolis and growing questions from lawmakers over spending at the Department of Homeland Security.
The White House moved into damage-control mode as Trump seeks to keep his administration united while confronting escalating international tensions, including the ongoing U.S.-Israel war against Iran.
Trump said he will nominate Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma to replace Noem, though the appointment requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
The leadership change marks the first Cabinet-level departure of Trump’s second presidential term and a stunning reversal for a close ally once tasked with carrying out the administration’s mass-deportation policies.
Noem’s tenure had come under increasing scrutiny following congressional hearings and controversies surrounding enforcement operations.
CONTROVERSY SURROUNDS LEADERSHIP
Lawmakers from both parties questioned Noem over the fatal shootings of two protesters during demonstrations in Minneapolis earlier this year by federal immigration enforcement officers.
The incidents sparked protests and lawsuits, while critics said the Department of Homeland Security had failed to adequately explain the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Members of Congress also scrutinized a $220 million advertising campaign encouraging migrants living in the United States illegally to voluntarily leave the country.
The campaign prominently featured Noem and raised questions about whether the president had authorized the effort.
However, Trump has denied approving the campaign beforehand.
QUESTIONS OVER SPENDING, FLIGHTS
During congressional hearings, lawmakers also pressed Noem about reports that luxury aircraft had been made available to transport migrants during deportation operations — an issue critics said reflected questionable spending priorities.
Some Republicans joined Democrats in expressing frustration over the department’s management and its handling of high-profile enforcement operations.
Noem also faced criticism over the pace of disaster assistance distributed through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the administration’s broader response to emergencies.
The controversies increased political pressure on the administration at a time when immigration remains one of Trump’s central policy priorities.
Analysts said the growing disputes ultimately made Noem increasingly vulnerable within the administration.
REPLACEMENT AND NEW ROLE
Trump announced the leadership change on his Truth Social platform, praising Noem while confirming that Senator Markwayne Mullin would be nominated to replace her.
“Kristi Noem has served us well and has had numerous and spectacular results, especially on the Border,” Trump wrote.
He added that she would become “Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas,” a regional security initiative focused on cooperation across the Western Hemisphere.
Noem appeared at a law enforcement event in Nashville, Tennessee, shortly after the announcement, but did not address her dismissal.
Instead, she read from prepared remarks and reiterated the administration’s immigration message without mentioning the controversy.
SENATE CONFIRMATION AWAITED
Mullin must be confirmed by the Senate, though under federal law, he could serve as acting Homeland Security secretary while his nomination is pending.
Speaking briefly during Senate votes after the announcement, Mullin said he did not know how quickly the confirmation process would move.
“The president and I are good friends,” Mullin said. “We look forward to working more closely with the White House.”
The leadership shake-up comes as Trump seeks to maintain momentum on his immigration agenda while navigating growing international tensions and domestic political pressure.
