Trump-Led Federal Crackdown Slashed Violent Crime in Washington, D.C.

Background

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

(Worthy News) – U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said Tuesday that a federal crime crackdown in the nation’s capital has led to dramatic reductions in violent crime, crediting the effort to President Donald Trump’s public safety initiative.

Speaking at a news conference, Pirro said carjackings are down 68 percent, homicides have fallen 60 percent, and robberies have dropped 49 percent since National Guard troops and federal agents began patrolling Washington last summer. More than 8,400 arrests have been made and 850 illegal firearms removed from the streets during the nearly five-month operation, she said.

Pirro praised Trump’s “no-nonsense mandate” on law and order, saying the surge in federal resources has helped dismantle criminal networks and restore safety across the District. She also noted a sharp decline in teen fatalities, with 17 teenagers killed prior to the federal surge compared to just two since it began in August.

The U.S. attorney addressed concerns over past crime reporting, citing an investigation by the Republican-led House Oversight Committee that accused former police leadership of downgrading offenses. The probe, which involved the Metropolitan Police Department, partly prompted the White House to launch the federal mission. Former Police Chief Pamela A. Smith has denied the allegations.

Pirro said prosecution rates have also improved significantly, with fewer than 10 percent of cases now going unpursued, compared with nearly 70 percent three years ago. However, she warned of a troubling rise in strangulation cases, which increased nearly 60 percent in 2025, urging victims to seek immediate help.
