Trump Signals Harder Line on Moscow, Considers Tomahawk Missiles for Ukraine

Background

by Emmitt Barry, with reporting from Washington D.C. Bureau Staff

(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump is taking a sharply tougher line against Moscow, authorizing Ukraine to strike inside Russian territory with U.S. weapons, considering Kyiv’s request for Tomahawk cruise missiles, and urging China and India to slash their purchases of Russian oil.

The shift comes after months of frustration over the stalemated conflict. At first cautious in his approach, Trump has recently signaled that Ukraine could reclaim all of its original territory. “That is very much an option,” he declared last week, adding that NATO nations should shoot down Russian drones and jets that cross into their airspace.

On Fox News Sunday, Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg revealed Trump had approved the use of long-range U.S. weapons for strikes inside Russia. Vice President JD Vance confirmed that the administration is reviewing European proposals to supply Tomahawk missiles, with funding to be covered by European partners. “It’s something the president is going to make the final determination on,” Vance said.

The U.S.-made Tomahawk has a range of about 1,500 miles (2,500 kilometers), placing Moscow within Kyiv’s reach if the weapons are transferred. Russia quickly pushed back, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warning that such a move would raise questions about whether Ukrainians could operate the systems without direct American involvement. He dismissed the missiles as “no magic weapon” that could change the war’s course.

Trump’s more rigid stance follows his August summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which produced no significant breakthroughs. Since then, Moscow has stepped up provocations, including drones entering Polish and Romanian territory and missile-armed MiG-29 jets breaching Estonian airspace. Eastern European officials warned that these moves are designed to test NATO’s unity.

“Inexcusably, even NATO countries have not cut off much Russian energy,” Trump told the United Nations. He accused China and India of bankrolling Putin’s war by continuing to buy Russian oil. The administration has already imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods and warned of additional measures if New Delhi and Beijing fail to reduce their reliance on Moscow’s energy exports.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has congratulated Moldova’s pro-European leadership for retaining power in elections allegedly marred by Russian interference, signaling broader regional resistance to Kremlin influence.

With Tomahawks on the table, NATO on edge, and Russia facing escalating economic pressure, Trump’s pivot marks one of the most dramatic shifts in U.S. policy since the war began.
