Air Force Moves Closer to Fielding Pilotless Fighter Aircraft

(Worthy News) – The Air Force’s plans for pilotless combat aircraft are moving beyond prototypes. This week, the service gave two of them official names: FQ-42 Vengeance and FQ-44 Fury. It also laid out an ambitious timetable, saying it intends to have 500 combat-ready aircraft by 2032 as part of an eventual fleet of about 1,000.
These aircraft are designed to fly alongside crewed fighters, giving American pilots more reach and more options in dangerous airspace. The Air Force calls them Collaborative Combat Aircraft. Their promise is straightforward: put capable aircraft into a fight without putting a pilot in every cockpit.
There is already a measure of progress behind that promise. In July, an FQ-44 prototype fired an AIM-120 missile at a digital target during a test over the Mojave Desert. The Air Force said the aircraft carried out the firing sequence within parameters set by a pilot. The decision to release a weapon remained with a human operator—a distinction that matters as autonomous systems take on a larger role in combat.
Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink said the aircraft are intended to work in tandem with the rest of the fleet. The service says it entered initial production for 150 Vengeance and Fury aircraft in June.
