Dutch Child’s Death Reignites Euthanasia Debate (Worthy News Investigation)

Background

by Stefan J. Bos, Worthy News Europe Bureau Chief

THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS (Worthy News) – A debate over who has the right to live or die has re-emerged in the Netherlands after doctors ended the life of a severely disabled child who was not yet 2 years old.

It is the first case reported by authorities under new rules allowing the termination of life of seriously ill children between the ages of 1 and 12 in the European nation.

The child, whose sex and identity have not been disclosed, had extensive and irreversible brain damage, severe cerebral palsy, epilepsy and visual impairment, according to the Netherlands’ Review Committee on Late-term Abortions and Termination of Life of Neonates and Children aged under 12.

The child was born extremely prematurely, at 26 weeks and three days, while the family was abroad, according to the committee. Serious complications followed, including multiple infections that led to sepsis.

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan later revealed extensive and irreversible brain damage.

SEVERE BRAIN DAMAGE

The child developed severe spastic cerebral palsy and was believed to have cerebral visual impairment. At around 8 months, the child was also diagnosed with infantile epileptic spasms syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy, according to medics.

By the time the child was approaching the age of 2, doctors estimated the developmental age at around 6 weeks.

“Every facet of ‘being human’ in terms of motor skills, behavior and personality was severely affected, and there would be no improvement,” the review committee concluded.

Yet not all physicians initially agreed that ending the child’s life was justified.

The doctor leading the child’s care sought independent opinions from physicians outside his own region. They initially concluded that the child was not continuously suffering unbearably and that reasonable alternatives remained, including palliative care and other medications that might better control the epileptic seizures.

DOCTORS DISAGREED

Further treatment was attempted, but the committee said the medications caused additional serious side effects and failed to provide sufficient relief.

Another independent physician later concluded that the child’s suffering was clearly unbearable and that the requirements for termination of life under Dutch rules had been met.

The review committee ultimately concluded that the physician “acted with due care.”

The Dutch government maintains that termination of life for children aged 1 to 12 is allowed only under exceptional circumstances.

“Sometimes, a child is so severely ill that the parents and doctor together decide that there is no alternative but to terminate the child’s life,” the government noted in a statement reviewed by Worthy News. “The doctor must always exercise due medical care.”

DUTCH RULES DEFENDED

“Termination of life is only allowed if a child is terminally ill and is suffering unbearably with no prospect of improvement,” the government explained. “This means the child is in constant, severe pain. And that there is no cure, and no reasonable alternative to relieve the child’s suffering, even through palliative care.”

Pro-life activists, including devout Christians and other critics, have long expressed reservations about euthanasia, with some describing it as murder.

Dutch Cardinal Wim Eijk, president of the Netherlands’ bishops’ conference and a physician with expertise in medical ethics, questioned whether ending the child’s life could be described as merciful.

“The word ‘merciful’ is often used nowadays to justify ethically questionable actions. However, is it merciful to violate the fundamental dignity of the human person by ending their life?” Eijk said in published remarks.

“What is truly merciful is providing adequate care, in this case in the form of palliative care,” he stressed.

‘DEATH CULTURE’ CONCERNS

Critics view the practice as part of what they call a growing “death culture” in the liberal-leaning Netherlands, where abortion is also generally permitted up to around 24 weeks of pregnancy.

Late-term abortions after that stage are permitted only in “exceptional circumstances” and are subject to separate review requirements, according to the government.

The controversy comes as the nation of more than 18 million people, historically predominantly Christian, has become increasingly secularized. Latest official figures show that 58 percent of people aged 15 and older identified with no religion in 2025, compared with 16 percent identifying as Roman Catholic and 12 percent as Protestant.

The discussion has also extended to the elderly. The liberal D66 party backs proposed legislation allowing people aged 75 and older who consider their lives “completed” to receive assistance in ending their lives, even without an underlying medical condition, though the proposal has not become law.

However, in circumstances involving seriously ill children whose lives have barely begun, a physician may decide together with the parents to terminate the child’s life, according to the government.

PARENTS CONSULTED

“This decision is always made in consultation with the parents and, if possible, also with the child,” the government said.

A special review committee examines whether the physician acted with due care and forwards its findings to the Public Prosecution Service, which determines whether the doctor complied with the law.

The doctor involved later told Dutch television’s Nieuwsuur (Newshour), a current-affairs program, that the unprecedented nature of the case had left him feeling vulnerable.

“As a doctor, you are in an extremely vulnerable position, because this has never happened before,” he said. “It still feels as if a sword of Damocles has been hanging over your head for almost a year.”

He hoped the ruling would help other families facing similar circumstances discuss the option with their physicians.

DOCTOR SPEAKS OUT

“I think there are parents out there who have never dared to discuss the option of ending their child’s life before,” he added. “Hopefully, this ruling provides support to these parents to discuss this option with their treating physician.”

The doctor described allowing termination of life in such circumstances as “a kind of emancipation of the child.”

The case is being closely watched internationally amid a broader debate over when, if ever, a life should be deliberately ended.

The Netherlands became the first country in the world to legalize euthanasia in 2002, with its euthanasia law allowing children aged 12 and older to request the procedure under strict conditions.

The procedure involving children aged 1 to 12 is legally distinct because such young children cannot themselves make a legally valid euthanasia request. Dutch authorities therefore formally describe these cases as “termination of life.”

CHILD EUTHANASIA ABROAD

Neighboring Belgium also permits euthanasia involving minors under exceptionally strict conditions and does not set a fixed minimum age. However, the minor must be capable of discernment and personally request euthanasia, death must be expected in the near future, the suffering must be physical, and the parents or legal representatives must consent.

Belgian authorities reported one euthanasia case involving a minor in 2025, bringing the total to seven since Belgium extended its euthanasia law to minors in 2014.

Critics, however, argue that intentionally ending the life of a child who cannot personally consent crosses a fundamental moral boundary.

The Dutch case was expected to intensify a national and wider debate over whether doctors and the state should ever have the authority to end a life, including that of society’s most vulnerable.
