Erdogan Warns Greece After Israel Defense Deal Raises Stakes in Aegean

Background

Turkey objects as Athens moves forward with Israeli-built “Achilles’ Shield” air-defense system

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

ANKARA/JERUSALEM (Worthy News) –  Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Greece to halt the militarization of Aegean islands after Athens signed a major defense agreement with Israel, a move that could reshape the military balance in the eastern Mediterranean.

The deal, valued at roughly €3 billion, calls for Israel to help Greece build a multilayered air-defense network known as “Achilles’ Shield.” The system is expected to strengthen Greece’s ability to detect and defend against aircraft, drones and missile threats across its territory, including the Aegean Sea.

Erdogan did not name Israel directly in his warning, but his remarks came just days after the Israeli-Greek agreement was finalized. He accused Athens of taking the wrong path and said Turkey “will do what needs to be done” if its rights are threatened.

The dispute reflects a wider regional realignment. Greece, Israel and Cyprus have steadily expanded defense and energy cooperation, while Turkey has pushed its “Blue Homeland” doctrine, asserting a broader sphere of influence across the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean.

The warning underscores how quickly the eastern Mediterranean is becoming a strategic fault line, with Israel, Greece and Cyprus drawing closer while Turkey presses its own regional ambitions. What once looked like a dispute over islands and airspace is now part of a much larger contest over power, defense, energy routes and influence from the Aegean to the Middle East.
