DAYTON, USA (Worthy News) – A former Ohio pastor and American Idol television show contestant has been convicted of aggravated murder and other charges for killing his wife while having an affair with a young woman he met at his church.
The jury appeared convinced by prosecutors who said Caleb Flynn, 40, staged a home invasion to conceal the crime.
Flynn was found guilty Tuesday of killing his 37-year-old wife, Ashley Flynn, a schoolteacher and volleyball coach, at their home in Tipp City, a suburb north of the U.S. city of Dayton.
Prosecutors argued that Flynn wanted to continue his affair while keeping his two daughters, his high-paying job at his wife’s family business and his position in the church.
“He wanted to keep his mistress and have his daughters all to himself,” Assistant Miami County Prosecutor Matthew Joseph told jurors.
CHURCH AFFAIR
Alleigha Botner testified that she met Flynn in 2022 when she was a 20-year-old intern at his church and had an affair with him for more than a year.
During the trial, Botner read text messages exchanged with Flynn, including one sent about six months before Ashley was killed.
“I was up until 4 a.m. last night crying, literally trying to think of ways to kill her and not go to jail,” Flynn wrote.
Botner also testified that Flynn told her he hated his wife and had thoughts of killing her.
Testimony indicated that Flynn undertook a 40-day fast in 2025 seeking God’s guidance about whether he should leave his wife and later told Botner that he believed he had received divine approval to do so.
AMERICAN IDOL APPEARANCE
The testimony contrasted sharply with Flynn’s public appearance on American Idol in 2013, when he told television viewers how his wife had encouraged him to pursue his musical ambitions.
Flynn, who spoke publicly about his Christian faith, auditioned before judges Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson and Nicki Minaj but did not advance to the main competition in Hollywood.
More than a decade later, prosecutors portrayed Flynn as a man who wanted to escape his marriage without losing his children, career or standing in the church.
Flynn maintained that a burglar killed Ashley. His defense lawyers stressed that investigators never recovered the murder weapon and argued there was no physical evidence proving Flynn fired the fatal shots.
“His being unfaithful doesn’t equal murder,” defense attorney Patrick Mulligan told the jury. “The issue here isn’t, ‘Was he a good husband?’”
JURY CONVICTS FLYNN
Mulligan argued that incriminating text messages Flynn sent to his lover complaining about his wife were intended to make Botner feel good rather than evidence of a plan to commit murder.
But after deliberating for just over two hours, jurors found Flynn guilty on all nine counts, including aggravated murder, murder and tampering with evidence.
Flynn closed his eyes, shook his head and struggled to maintain his composure as the verdicts were read before beginning to sob as the judge dismissed the jury.
His attorneys have indicated that an appeal is likely.
Flynn could be sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole when he returns to court for sentencing Monday, October 5.
