Houthis Launch Missile Attacks on Saudi Capital as Yemen War Expands

Background

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

(Worthy News) – Iran-backed Houthi rebels intensified ballistic missile attacks against Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, on Thursday, disrupting international flights, threatening critical infrastructure, and raising fears of a broader regional war as fighting spreads toward Islam’s holiest cities.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for launching a ballistic missile toward King Khalid International Airport and threatened to shut down Saudi airspace unless Riyadh withdraws its support for Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

Saudi authorities reported that three people were killed this week in strikes targeting airports in Riyadh and Abha. Missile interception debris also damaged a children’s nursery and medical clinic in the capital, according to Saudi Civil Defense officials.

The escalating attacks prompted flight delays, shelter-in-place instructions at some schools, and work-from-home orders at major international companies operating in Riyadh’s financial district.

Regional Powers Mobilize as War Threatens Red Sea Shipping

The renewed fighting has transformed Yemen’s civil war into another major front in the expanding confrontation involving Iran and its regional allies.

Saudi Arabia is seeking military assistance from Turkey and Pakistan under the recently established Mecca defense agreement, while Syria is reportedly considering providing defensive support or deploying forces against the Houthis.

Turkey has pledged technical and defensive assistance, including intelligence sharing and military equipment, while Pakistan has reportedly supplied military equipment and deployed personnel to support Saudi defenses.

Meanwhile, Houthi forces have seized territory along Yemen’s strategic Red Sea coastline, threatening the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s most important maritime shipping corridors.

Saudi-backed forces have launched counteroffensives to recover territory near the strait, but Houthi advances around Taiz have opened additional fronts.

The humanitarian consequences are mounting. Approximately 200,000 Yemenis have been displaced since fighting resumed, deepening an already devastating crisis.

The Prophetic Dimension: Yemen, the Mahdi, and Islam’s Holy Cities

Beyond the military confrontation lies a religious dimension that Worthy News has examined in previous reports concerning the Houthis and Shiite Islamic end-times expectations.

In Houthi Advance on Red Sea Port Carries Stakes Beyond Oil — and a Possible Prophetic Resonance, Worthy News explored how Yemen occupies a significant place in certain Shiite eschatological traditions.

Within Twelver Shiite Islam, believers anticipate the appearance of the Mahdi, a hidden imam expected to emerge in the last days, defeat injustice, and establish righteous rule.

Some traditions describe a figure known as the Yamani, who emerges from Yemen and calls people to support the Mahdi. Other traditions associate the Mahdi’s appearance with Mecca and describe an opposing army being swallowed by the earth in the desert between Mecca and Medina.

These beliefs become particularly noteworthy as the conflict moves closer to Saudi Arabia’s religious heartland.

Worthy News previously reported that the Houthis were accused of attacking electrical infrastructure serving Medina, one of Islam’s holiest cities. That incident followed warnings concerning Mecca as Houthi operations expanded deeper into Saudi territory.

For some adherents of Shiite apocalyptic traditions, warfare involving Yemen, Mecca, and Medina may carry significance extending far beyond conventional military objectives.

Certain interpretations anticipate a period of upheaval involving rival Islamic powers before the Mahdi’s appearance, with the Yamani playing a role in the events leading toward that anticipated confrontation.

However, an important distinction remains: the Houthis originate from Zaydi Shiism, while Iran’s dominant religious establishment follows Twelver Shiism. Although Iranian influence has strengthened their political and ideological relationship, their theological traditions are not identical.

There is also no independently verified evidence that Houthi commanders launched the current offensive specifically to fulfill the Yamani prophecies or prepare for the Mahdi’s arrival.

Nevertheless, the convergence of Iranian-backed military expansion, fighting near Islam’s sacred cities, and longstanding Islamic end-times expectations raises an important question: Could religious interpretations of the conflict make an already dangerous war even more difficult to contain?

As Worthy News has previously emphasized, understanding the religious convictions that shape regional movements is essential to understanding the Middle East. For Christians watching these developments through a biblical worldview, the unfolding confrontation is another reminder of Yeshua’s warning in Matthew 24:6 concerning wars and rumors of wars—and His instruction not to be troubled by them.

The battle for Yemen is no longer confined to Yemen. It is drawing additional nations into a confrontation that threatens global commerce, regional stability, and the heartland of Islam itself.
