Missionaries Help Nearly 200 Pregnant Refugees In Jordan Choose Life

AMMAN (Worthy News) – Christian missionaries told Worthy News Wednesday that their “pregnancy support ministry” in Jordan has helped nearly 200 pregnant refugee women and girls over the past year despite war, displacement and, in some cases, pressure to abort their unborn children.

The missionaries, whose identities and precise location were withheld for security reasons, said the Christian outreach provides medical assistance, counseling, food and other practical support to vulnerable expectant mothers.

They said many of the women had fled conflicts in neighboring countries and were struggling with poverty, uncertain legal status and limited access to health care.

The ministry operates with assistance from Christian Aid Mission (CAM), a U.S.-based organization supporting indigenous missionaries and churches in some of the world’s most difficult and dangerous regions.

“Nearly 200 pregnant women and girls have received support during the past year,” CAM told Worthy News, citing information from the local missionaries.

PREGNANT REFUGEES SUPPORTED

The missionaries said the women often arrive frightened and uncertain about their future, with some facing intense pressure from relatives or partners to end their pregnancies.

Ministry workers seek to provide emotional and spiritual care while helping women obtain prenatal examinations, medicines, transportation and essential supplies.

The outreach also offers food, clothing, diapers and other assistance after babies are born, according to those involved.

Among those receiving support was Mariam, a refugee mother who was pregnant with triplets and feared she would be unable to provide for the children.

Missionaries helped her obtain medical care and supplied food and other necessities before and after the birth, CAM said.

MOTHERS CHOOSE LIFE

Another woman, identified as Laila, reportedly arrived at the ministry in severe distress after becoming pregnant amid difficult family circumstances.

Workers said they listened to her concerns, prayed with her and helped her receive medical attention and practical assistance.

The ministry said Laila ultimately decided to continue the pregnancy and later delivered a healthy child.

A woman identified as Huda also rejected pressure to undergo an abortion after receiving counseling and support from Christian workers, according to CAM.

Missionaries said her experience demonstrated how compassionate assistance could give pregnant women alternatives when they believed abortion was their only option.

MINISTRY REQUESTS PRAYER

The missionaries asked Christians worldwide to pray that vulnerable mothers would receive the medical and emotional support they need and that their unborn children would be protected.

They also requested prayer for wisdom and protection as workers serve refugees in an overwhelmingly Muslim nation where openly sharing the Christian faith can be sensitive.

Jordan has long been regarded as one of the more stable countries in the Middle East and has received large numbers of people fleeing wars in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere.

However, many refugees remain dependent on humanitarian assistance because restrictions on employment and residency make it difficult for them to support their families.

Aid organizations have warned that funding shortages are forcing agencies to reduce food, medical and educational programs despite continuing humanitarian needs.

HUMANITARIAN NEEDS REMAIN

Jordan remains one of the Middle East’s largest refugee-hosting nations.

The country hosts nearly 400,000 registered refugees and asylum-seekers—mainly from Syria, but also from Iraq, Yemen, Sudan and Somalia—according to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR).

In addition, nearly 2.4 million Palestinians are registered as refugees in Jordan with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), although most have lived in the kingdom for generations.

About half of Jordan’s refugee population are children, and most refugees live in towns and cities rather than camps, according to U.N. figures.

Among them are Muslims as well as Christians who have fled conflict, persecution and instability across the Middle East.

Missionaries said they hope their ministry will continue providing practical assistance, emotional support and the Christian message of hope to vulnerable mothers facing difficult pregnancies far from home.
