Supreme Court Upholds Tennessee Law Protecting Children from Transgender Medical Interventions

Background

by Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Staff

(Worthy News) – In a landmark victory for parents, conservatives, and advocates of child safety, the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld Tennessee’s law banning transgender drugs, hormones, and surgeries for minors. The 6-3 decision in United States v. Skrmetti delivers a powerful affirmation of states’ rights to safeguard children from irreversible medical harm.

Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, made clear that Tennessee’s law does not violate the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause. The ruling rejected the Biden administration’s demand for heightened scrutiny, instead affirming the Sixth Circuit Court’s rational basis review — a standard that recognizes Tennessee’s legitimate interest in protecting vulnerable youth.

Tennessee’s law, passed after shocking revelations from Daily Wire host Matt Walsh’s exposé on Vanderbilt University’s gender clinic, prohibits puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and gender-related surgeries for children. Physicians who violate the law face losing their licenses and fines up to $25,000. Importantly, the law empowers families to sue for damages if their children are harmed by these controversial treatments.

“This law is about protecting kids from the consequences of decisions that they cannot fully understand,” said Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, who successfully defended the law before the High Court in December.

The plaintiffs–trans-identifying teens and their families–had argued that the law violated equal protection and parental rights. However, the Court sided with Tennessee, ruling that the state has the authority to regulate such high-risk procedures on minors.

The decision is expected to have a sweeping impact, bolstering similar laws in over 20 Republican-led states that have taken action to shield children from radical gender ideology in medicine.

Critics of transgender medical interventions point to serious, lifelong risks associated with these treatments. Puberty blockers can permanently impair bone development, cause infertility, and damage sexual function. Cross-sex hormones are linked to blood clots, heart attacks, liver damage, and increased cancer risks. Gender surgeries, including double mastectomies and genital reconstruction, are irreversible and often lead to painful complications and regret.

This marks only the second time the Supreme Court has addressed the contentious issue of transgender procedures on minors, following its 2024 decision allowing Idaho to enforce its ban. The ruling today underscores the Court’s recognition that states have a duty to protect children’s health and well-being, even in the face of fierce pressure from activists and the federal government.

Conservatives nationwide celebrated the decision as a major step in restoring sanity and safeguarding children from what they view as dangerous experimentation promoted under the banner of gender ideology.
