WASHINGTON, D.C. (Worthy News) – President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday aimed at strengthening America’s defense industrial base and reducing the military’s dependence on China and other foreign suppliers for critical materials and components.
The order sharply limits the circumstances under which the Department of War may grant waivers allowing defense contractors to purchase restricted minerals or materials from foreign sources. Contractors seeking exemptions must demonstrate that they made “exhaustive efforts” to locate acceptable alternatives and provide plans for shifting production toward American or allied suppliers.
“It is the policy of the United States that not only the finished equipment deployed by our military, but also the critical materials and components necessary to manufacture, maintain, sustain, and repair that equipment, are sourced domestically or from allied nations,” the order stated.
Companies that fail to demonstrate meaningful efforts to secure reliable supply chains could lose eligibility for future defense contracts.
“No more: ‘We tried nothing and we’re out of options,’” White House senior counselor Peter Navarro told reporters ahead of the announcement.
The directive also orders the Pentagon to develop regulations requiring contractors to map their supply chains from raw materials to completed weapons systems. Companies will be required to identify the origin of minerals, components, software, and other inputs while assessing suppliers for foreign ownership, financial instability, and manufacturing vulnerabilities.
“This is not paperwork. It is battlefield preparation,” Navarro said, warning that military leaders must know whether critical weapons systems depend on foreign-controlled suppliers before war begins.
The order authorizes Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to take action against contractors that commit fraud or deliberately mislead the government. Suspected violations may be referred to the Justice Department for investigation and possible prosecution.
The White House said the initiative is intended to restore domestic manufacturing capacity, protect military readiness, and ensure the United States can sustain weapons production during a prolonged conflict.
