Two Killed In German School Attack; Teen Suspect Detained

BERLIN (Worthy News) – Two people were killed Thursday in an apparent relationship-related attack at a school near the German capital Berlin, with authorities detaining a 19-year-old German man as the prime suspect, police and officials said.
The violence occurred at the privately operated Docemus school campus in Gosen-Neu Zittau in the eastern state of Brandenburg, prompting a massive deployment of police and emergency services.
Police stressed that investigators had found no indications of a mass school attack and were treating the violence as an apparent crime arising from a personal relationship.
Local media identified the victims as an 18-year-old female student and a 30-year-old man who reportedly died while attempting to intervene and stop the attacker.
The Märkische Allgemeine newspaper reported that the detained suspect was the former boyfriend of the 18-year-old victim, although authorities had not immediately confirmed all details surrounding their relationship.
POLICE INVESTIGATE ATTACK
Police were alerted at around 1:45 p.m., prompting officers, firefighters, ambulances and rescue helicopters to rush to the school campus.
Local reports suggested that a knife was used in the attack, though police had not immediately publicly specified the weapon as investigators continued gathering evidence.
It was not immediately clear whether the 19-year-old suspect was or had previously been a student at the school.
Brandenburg state parliament president Ulrike Liedtke described the killing as a “cowardly femicide,” saying the renewed deadly violence against a woman filled her with “deep sorrow and anger.”
She also expressed shock that a person who showed courage by trying to help had lost his life in the violence, while Brandenburg state premier Dietmar Woidke called the killings an “unimaginable act of violence.”
SCHOOL CANCELS CLASSES
Docemus managing director Michael Kunz said regular classes would be canceled Friday, although the school would remain open for students wishing to gather and receive support following the killings.
School officials said they wanted to provide students with a safe place to meet, talk and begin processing what had happened before deciding how normal school life would resume.
The killings came less than a week after another deadly attack shocked a European school, this time in Sweden.
A 17-year-old girl was killed and three boys were wounded when an 18-year-old armed with a sword attacked Brinell School in Fagersta, about 170 kilometers (105 miles) northwest of Stockholm, on August 21. Two of the boys were seriously injured.
The 18-year-old, who school officials said was a student at Brinell School, was detained on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Police fired shots during the operation to arrest him, but later clarified that he was not struck by the gunfire.
SECOND SUSPECT DETAINED
The Swedish investigation has since widened, with authorities announcing Wednesday that a second man had been arrested on suspicion of assisting murder and attempted murder. Prosecutors had not disclosed his age or explained his suspected role in the attack.
Investigators are also examining whether the alleged attacker had links to online communities glorifying school violence. A TikTok account reportedly associated with him posted an image of a sword shortly before the attack and contained material referring to previous mass violence.
The Fagersta attack revived memories of Sweden’s worst mass shooting, when 11 people, including the gunman, were killed at an adult education center in Örebro in February 2025.
Germany has also experienced recent school violence. Last month, two girls were seriously wounded and a 16-year-old suspect was detained following an attack at a secondary school in southern Germany.
Thursday’s killings near Berlin added to concerns over violence affecting European schools, although German police stressed that the Gosen-Neu Zittau deaths appeared to stem from a personal relationship rather than an indiscriminate mass attack.
