(Worthy News) – The International Atomic Energy Agency is expected to remove nuclear material from a clandestine site in Syria under a secret agreement brokered by the Trump administration between Israel and Syria, according to reports Monday.
The material is believed to be connected to Syria’s former covert nuclear program surrounding the Al-Kibar reactor, which was built with North Korean assistance and destroyed by Israel in 2007. Israeli officials have continued monitoring suspected nuclear-related locations since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government.
At the center of the latest negotiations was a location reportedly known as “Site 99,” where U.S. officials believe residue associated with the former reactor remained. Israel warned that it would not permit nuclear material to remain accessible inside Syria and reportedly considered another military strike if diplomatic efforts failed.
Instead, Washington worked with Syria’s new government and the IAEA to arrange for the material to be secured and removed, potentially eliminating another flashpoint involving Israel, Syria, and Turkey.
The negotiations were conducted quietly for months, with only a small number of officials in Washington, Jerusalem, and Damascus reportedly aware of the discussions.
