(Worthy News) – Archaeologists have uncovered a massive 2,000-year-old Jewish ritual purification complex just steps from Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, offering a remarkable glimpse into how pilgrims prepared to worship at the Second Temple.
The complex, located in the Ophel area near the southern wall of the Temple Mount, covers roughly 280 square meters and contains three large ritual baths, or mikvaot, along with a large central pool. Researchers date the monumental complex to the early first century A.D., around the time of Yeshua (Jesus).
The site sits roughly 50 meters from the ancient Triple Gate, part of the Hulda Gates through which Jewish worshippers entered the Temple Mount. Archaeologists believe the facility was designed to handle large numbers of pilgrims who came to Jerusalem for the biblical pilgrimage feasts of Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot.
The discovery includes an unusually sophisticated drainage system, with tunnels reaching more than two meters high and carrying water toward the Kidron Valley. One mikveh survived with its vaulted stone roof intact, reaching approximately 4.2 meters above the floor. Researchers believe the baths may have received running water connected to the ancient aqueduct system supplying Jerusalem and the Temple Mount.
Dozens of coins from the Jewish revolt against Rome were also recovered, including coins dating near the destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple in A.D. 70. The evidence indicates the purification center remained active until the final years of the Temple.
The discovery provides another tangible connection to the biblical world in which enormous numbers of Jewish pilgrims traveled to Jerusalem to worship the Lord.
The Torah commanded Israel, “Three times in the year all your males shall appear before the Lord GOD” (Exodus 23:17), referring to the pilgrimage festivals. The newly uncovered baths reveal some of the infrastructure built to accommodate those worshippers as they prepared to ascend the Temple Mount.
