FEMA Releases $300 Million to Protect Houses of Worship, Nonprofits

(Worthy News) – The Federal Emergency Management Agency has released $300 million in federal security grants to help protect houses of worship and other nonprofit organizations facing heightened threats across the United States.
The fiscal year 2026 funding through FEMA’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program will support approximately 1,600 organizations nationwide. The program provides money for security improvements at nonprofits considered at high risk of terrorist or extremist attacks, including physical security upgrades, training and other protective measures.
Demand continues to significantly exceed available funding. Jewish organizations, in particular, have reported sharply rising security expenses. The Jewish Federations of North America said Jewish institutions spent more than $1 billion on security in 2025, up 33% from $765 million in 2024.
Eric Fingerhut, president and CEO of the Jewish Federations of North America, described the latest federal funding as “much-needed relief,” while warning that demand continues to outpace available resources.
Jewish organizations and other faith groups have urged Congress to substantially expand the program. The bipartisan Jewish American Security Act, introduced by Sens. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) and James Lankford (R-Okla.), would authorize $1 billion for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program and expand federal efforts to combat antisemitism.
The security program has grown considerably since its early years as concerns over attacks targeting synagogues, churches and other religious institutions have increased. Congress appropriated $300 million for the program in fiscal 2026, divided between high-risk urban areas and nonprofits outside those designated areas.
