(Worthy News) – The Trump administration will back Israel’s efforts to maintain a buffer zone in Syria for the foreseeable future, the Jerusalm Post reported.
Despite the EU and UN making strides in normalizing relations with Syria’s new regime, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, at a Paris summit, Israel remains wary. The state views the new regime as a potential “wolf in sheep’s clothing,” confident in the Trump administration’s understanding of their concerns.
Even if the Europeans and the UN pressure Israel to withdraw in the coming months, with support from the Trump administration to maintain the buffer zone, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is expected to stay there for an extended period.
Pressure on Israel to leave the Syria buffer zone has been rising due to Sharaa’s pledge to honor the 1974 armistice and his efforts to reconnect with the West.
Meanwhile, earlier statements by Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz about maintaining their presence in Syria through 2025 or beyond were seen as strategies to emphasize Israeli security concerns in Syria.
