Israel, Venezuela Renew Consular Relations as Latin America Ties Strengthen

Background

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – Israel and Venezuela have agreed to renew consular relations for the first time since diplomatic ties were severed in 2009, marking another significant diplomatic development for Jerusalem in Latin America.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Venezuelan Foreign Minister Félix Plasencia reached an agreement following several weeks of talks, according to Israel’s Foreign Ministry. The new arrangement will establish a coordination mechanism allowing both countries to provide consular services to their citizens.

Venezuela broke diplomatic relations with Israel in 2009 under then-President Hugo Chávez. Relations remained frozen for years, but Caracas has taken a noticeably different approach toward Israel under Venezuela’s current leadership.

The development comes amid what has become a remarkable 24-hour diplomatic advance for Israel across Latin America.

Colombia Recognizes Israeli Sovereignty Over Golan Heights

Just one day earlier, Colombia formally recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, becoming only the second country after the United States to do so. Colombia said Israeli control of the strategic plateau was essential to the Jewish state’s national defense and ability to protect its citizens amid continuing regional instability.

Taken together, Colombia’s historic Golan declaration and Venezuela’s restoration of consular relations represent a strong diplomatic shift toward Israel in Latin America within roughly 24 hours — a region where Jerusalem has faced significant political opposition in recent years.

For Israel, the moves signal potentially expanding diplomatic space in the Western Hemisphere at a time when alliances, security partnerships, and international recognition have become increasingly important.
