Netanyahu Condemns IDF Soldier After Catholic Icon Vandalized in Southern Lebanon

Background

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

(Worthy News) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly condemned the actions of an Israeli soldier who vandalized a Catholic religious icon in southern Lebanon, calling the incident “stunning” and “deeply saddening” to both himself and the overwhelming majority of Israelis.

The controversy erupted after an image circulated online showing an Israel Defense Forces soldier damaging a statue of Jesus on the cross. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) later confirmed the image was authentic following an internal review and announced that a criminal investigation is now underway.

In a statement, Netanyahu emphasized Israel’s foundational commitment to religious freedom, saying the Jewish state “cherishes and upholds the values of tolerance and mutual respect between Jews and worshippers of all faiths.” He stressed that all religions flourish within Israel and that members of every faith are viewed as equal contributors to society.

“I condemn the act in the strongest terms,” Netanyahu said, adding that military authorities will pursue “appropriately harsh disciplinary action” against the soldier responsible.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar also denounced the incident, describing it as “grave and disgraceful.” He expressed confidence that the IDF would take firm action, noting that such behavior stands in direct contradiction to Israel’s national values.

“This shameful action is completely contrary to our values,” Sa’ar said. “Israel is a country that respects the different religions and their sacred symbols, and upholds tolerance and respect among faiths.”

Both leaders issued apologies to Christians who may have been hurt by the act, whether in Lebanon or around the world.

Netanyahu contrasted the incident with broader regional realities, stating that while Christians face persecution and violence in parts of the Middle East, Israel remains a place where the Christian population is growing and enjoying an increasing standard of living. He reiterated that Israel is unique in the region for its consistent protection of freedom of worship.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions along Israel’s northern border, where Israeli forces remain active in southern Lebanon under a fragile ceasefire arrangement. Officials have sought to underscore that the actions of one individual do not reflect the policies or values of the Israeli military or government.
