Numerous Dead, Injured As Dutch Tourist Coach Crashes In Swiss Alps

BERN, SWITZERLAND (Worthy News) – Numerous people were dead or injured after a tourist coach carrying 48 Dutch travelers crashed and overturned in the Swiss Alps, authorities and travel officials confirmed.
The accident happened Thursday between the villages of Zernez and Susch in the eastern canton of Graubünden, also known as Grisons, in Switzerland’s mountainous Engadine region.
Swiss police confirmed multiple fatalities and injuries but withheld exact casualty figures while authorities worked to notify the victims’ families.
The coach apparently struck a roadside barrier, left the road and overturned on its side below the roadway.
Police believe no other vehicles were involved.
MASSIVE RESCUE OPERATION
A major emergency operation followed, with ambulances, firefighters and several rescue helicopters deployed to the mountainous crash site.
Images from the area showed the coach lying on its side below the narrow road as emergency workers gathered around the wreckage.
All 48 passengers were Dutch customers of tour operator Oad, according to the General Dutch Association of Travel Companies, known by its Dutch acronym ANVR.
The cause remained under investigation, although ANVR director Frank Radstake suggested the driver may have been forced to make an evasive maneuver because of a rock on the road.
“The bus driver had to make an evasive maneuver, possibly because of a rock on the road,” Radstake told Dutch broadcaster RTL Nieuws. He explained that the coach apparently overturned during the maneuver and then slid down the embankment.
ROADWORKS NEAR CRASH
Roadworks had been underway for some time along the stretch where the accident occurred, but authorities had not established whether they played any role in the tragedy.
Investigators were reconstructing the crash and gathering evidence before the wreckage could be removed and the road reopened.
The coach belonged to Hartemink Touringcars, based in Eibergen in the eastern Netherlands, and was being used for an Oad holiday.
The group left the Netherlands on Monday for a trip with Austria as its main destination and was making a day excursion into neighboring Switzerland when the crash occurred.
Oad described itself as “deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic bus accident in Switzerland,” adding that its thoughts were with those involved and their relatives.
FAMILIES BEING INFORMED
“The authorities on the scene are currently fully engaged in providing assistance and establishing the situation and the number of victims,” the tour operator added.
Oad pledged to inform and assist relatives as soon as more details became available.
The Dutch Foreign Ministry was in contact with Swiss authorities, Oad and emergency assistance organizations to coordinate consular support, while the Eurocross emergency center in Leiden brought in additional personnel.
Police indicated that more details about the dead and injured were expected Friday after relatives had been notified.
Fatal accidents involving buses and coaches are relatively rare in Switzerland, which has one of Europe’s safer transport systems. Swiss federal statistics show that deaths involving bus passengers have generally remained at very low levels in recent years.
Zernez is an important gateway to the Swiss National Park, a vast Alpine nature reserve in the Engadine valley near Switzerland’s borders with Austria and Italy.
