Republicans Head to Texas for Historic First-Ever GOP Midterm Convention

Background

Trump, Vance and Republican leaders will gather in Dallas in an unprecedented effort to rally voters and preserve GOP control of Congress.

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

DALLAS, Texas (Worthy News) – Republicans will converge on Dallas Wednesday and Thursday for the party’s first-ever midterm convention, an unprecedented gathering designed to energize conservative voters as President Donald Trump and the GOP battle to retain control of Congress in November.

The two-day convention, set for Sept. 9–10 at the American Airlines Center, will resemble a presidential-year gathering, with President Trump delivering the opening-night keynote and returning for closing remarks Thursday. Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to headline the second night. The Republican National Committee says the event is intended to celebrate the administration’s accomplishments, showcase Republican candidates and unite voters behind the party’s agenda.

Organizers have scheduled more than 100 speeches and presentations covering tax cuts, health care, border security, trade, school choice, American manufacturing and other pillars of the Trump administration’s domestic agenda. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Attorney General Todd Blanche, congressional leaders and candidates from competitive races are among those expected to appear.

The gathering comes less than two months before the November midterms, when control of both chambers of Congress will be at stake. Republicans face the historical challenge confronting nearly every president’s party: persuading voters to turn out in large numbers when the president himself is not on the ballot. Trump and Republican strategists hope the Dallas convention can recreate some of the enthusiasm traditionally generated during presidential election years.

Texas will also provide a politically significant backdrop. The state’s closely watched U.S. Senate contest has become one of the major races of the 2026 cycle, and Republican leaders are seeking to unite the party after a contentious primary season. Trump-backed Senate nominee Ken Paxton is among the candidates scheduled to address the convention.

More broadly, the Dallas gathering represents a political experiment: whether a presidential-style convention can mobilize millions of voters during an election traditionally dominated by local congressional campaigns. If Republicans succeed, the strategy could reshape how parties approach future midterm elections — and potentially help Trump preserve the congressional majorities needed to advance his agenda during the final two years of his presidency.
