Two Dead, Including Shooter, in Attack on Dallas ICE Facility

Background

by Emmitt Barry, with reporting from Washington D.C. Bureau Staff

DALLAS, TEXAS (Worthy News) – At least two people are dead, including the gunman, and several others injured after a shooting early Wednesday at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Dallas.

The violence erupted around 6:30 a.m. local time as ICE officers were transferring detainees inside the facility. Authorities said the suspect opened fire when the sally port gate was open, apparently attempting to force his way in.

The gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials confirmed. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said there were “multiple injuries and fatalities,” though no ICE officers were harmed.

“While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop. Please pray for the victims and their families,” Noem wrote on X.

Dallas police sources told Fox News that three detainees were struck by gunfire; one was killed and two were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

Gunman Fired from Nearby Building

Police said the shooter opened fire from a nearby building into the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) office, which handles deportations. Local reports indicated the victims were migrants in custody.

“This could have been employees, detainees, or civilians visiting the facility—we are still confirming identities,” Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons told CNN.

DHS: Facility May Have Been Targeted

Tricia McLaughlin, a Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman, told Fox News the Dallas office had already been under heightened alert.

“It was just a month ago to the day there was a viable bomb threat in Dallas. This location looks like it has been targeted,” McLaughlin said. She urged critics of ICE to tone down rhetoric, warning: “We don’t want to get anyone killed.”

Officials Respond

Vice President JD Vance condemned the violence, calling it “an obsessive attack on law enforcement” and adding, “I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said his team is monitoring the situation. “We are praying for the swift recovery of those injured, and we are deeply grateful to the brave first responders who rushed to the scene,” Cruz wrote on X.

Violence Against ICE on the Rise

The attack comes as ICE faces increased tensions amid President Trump’s push for mass deportations. DHS has reported a 1000% increase in assaults on ICE officers in recent years, though critics dispute the figures.

Incidents targeting ICE have become more common. In 2019, shots were fired into ICE’s San Antonio office, and later that year, a man was killed while trying to ignite propane tanks outside another ICE facility.

The Dallas shooting is now under joint investigation by local police, ICE, and the Department of Homeland Security.
