U.S. Warns of Escalation as Iran Rejects Ceasefire Terms, Demands Control of Hormuz

Background

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – The White House issued a stark warning to Iran this week, signaling that further military action is imminent if Tehran refuses to agree to terms aimed at ending the escalating conflict between the United States, Israel, and the Iranian regime.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that negotiations are ongoing but declined to disclose who U.S. officials are engaging with on the Iranian side. Even as diplomatic channels remain open, both Washington and Jerusalem have reportedly paused plans to target certain senior Iranian officials, suggesting a narrow window for potential de-escalation.

Iran has publicly rejected the latest U.S. proposal—reportedly a 15-point framework addressing Tehran’s nuclear program, ballistic missile arsenal, regional proxy activity, and the critical Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials described the proposal as “excessive,” insisting that any end to hostilities must occur strictly on Tehran’s terms.

According to Iranian state-linked media, the regime has laid out its own conditions, including:

A complete halt to U.S. and Israeli strikes and targeted killings
Guaranteed war reparations
Binding assurances preventing future conflict
Recognition of Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz
Continuation of its military operations until conditions are met

Tehran’s demand for control over the Strait of Hormuz—through which roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes—has emerged as a major sticking point. U.S. officials have dismissed the broader Iranian demands as unrealistic, underscoring the deep divide between the two sides.

President Donald Trump, meanwhile, has adopted an uncompromising tone. Leavitt warned that failure to reach an agreement would result in overwhelming military retaliation.

“President Trump does not bluff,” she said. “If Iran fails to accept the reality of the current moment, they will be hit harder than they have ever been hit before.”

The warning comes as U.S. military operations—dubbed Operation Epic Fury—continue to degrade Iran’s capabilities. According to the White House, more than 9,000 targets have been struck, with Iranian missile and drone attacks reduced by roughly 90%. Officials claim much of Iran’s naval power and air defense systems have been effectively neutralized in what Leavitt described as the most significant naval destruction in a concentrated period since World War II.

Despite the pressure, Iran has not backed down. The regime has continued launching attacks across the region, including strikes targeting Israel and Gulf states. A drone strike triggered a large fire at Kuwait International Airport, while Saudi Arabia reported intercepting multiple drones over its oil-producing eastern region.

At the same time, the Pentagon is reinforcing its posture in the Middle East. Elements of the 82nd Airborne Division are being deployed alongside thousands of Marines and naval personnel, signaling that Washington is preparing for a range of military contingencies.

Efforts to mediate the conflict are ongoing, with countries such as Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt attempting to broker talks. There are indications that direct negotiations could take place in the coming days, though officials on all sides caution that the gaps remain wide and trust is severely lacking.

As the conflict enters its fourth week, the central question remains whether diplomacy can succeed where previous efforts have failed—or whether both sides are headed toward a deeper and more dangerous confrontation.
