BERLIN/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – German police arrested a 60-year-old man Friday after he allegedly shot dead two government employees who visited his home to check his firearms in the southern state of Bavaria, shocking a community where such violence is rare.
The victims, identified by colleagues as Bettina, 54, and Christian, 45, worked for the local government in the Neumarkt district. They were inspecting weapons at a house in Berngau, a village of about 2,600 residents southeast of Nuremberg, one of Bavaria’s major cities.
Residents reported hearing gunshots Thursday afternoon. Police arriving at the scene found Christian dead outside the house and Bettina inside.
The suspected gunman remained barricaded in the building, prompting authorities to seal off the surrounding area and warn residents to stay indoors. About 150 officers, including heavily armed special forces, were deployed.
After hours of unsuccessful negotiations, special forces entered the house early Friday and arrested the suspect, who was wounded in the leg by police gunfire and taken to a hospital.
RARE DEADLY ATTACK
Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said authorities carry out about 60,000 firearms inspections each year in the state, almost all without serious incidents.
The suspect was reportedly a licensed hunter and sport shooter who was permitted to own ten firearms. Officials said there had been no previous warning signs that he might become violent.
Germany has strict gun ownership laws, requiring people to obtain permission to own firearms and keep them securely stored. Officials conduct inspections to ensure these rules are followed.
Such checks are usually carried out by civilian government employees rather than armed police officers, making Thursday’s killings particularly troubling for authorities responsible for their safety.
The deaths also raised questions about whether additional precautions are needed when officials visit private homes to inspect weapons.
FAMILIES AND COLLEAGUES MOURN
Neumarkt district administrator Martin Meier said the killings had devastated the local government office.
“The Neumarkt District Office is shaken to its foundations,” he said, expressing condolences to the victims’ families and promising support for grieving colleagues.
The district administration temporarily closed as employees mourned, while the violence also stunned residents of Berngau, a normally quiet rural community.
Investigators were examining why the suspect allegedly opened fire during what was supposed to be a routine visit.
For the victims’ families and colleagues, the tragedy turned an ordinary working day into a devastating loss, leaving a community searching for answers.
